![]() Appleton, population 70,000, is located in northeastern Wisconsin near Lake Michigan and at the north end of Lake Winnebago. The Fox River runs through the heart of the town which is surrounded by large trees and numerous city parks. Appleton was settled by northern Europeans. Many current residents have German, Dutch or Polish ancestry. In recent years, Appleton has become more culturally diverse as peoples from other parts of the world have moved there including Hmong, Latinos and African-Americans. The Oneida Indian Nation is especially prominent in the area. Claims to fame Appleton was home to the young Eric Weiss, who later became escape artist and magician Harry Houdini. Senator Joseph McCarthy got his political start in the area. Appleton boasts the nation's first hydroelectric station which opened in 1882, as well as the first home run by electric power. |
