Gang members use graffiti, hand signs, jewelry, tattoos, clothing and colors to signify their membership in a gang and to communicate their gang affiliation to others. Each gang has its own unique graffiti, signs and colors.

It is important to note that not all gangs have names, signs or symbols. Some gangs are more discreet - trying to keep a low profile - as they deal in illicit activities such as drug or weapon sales.

HAND SIGNS
Hand signs are used to communicate within the gang and as a challenge or "dis" to rival gangs. Signs are made by forming letters and/or numbers with fingers.

TATTOOS
Tattoos are used to mark one's body indicating membership in a particular gang. They can include the name, initials, street of origin, or symbols of a gang.

COLORS
Most gangs have particular colors that they use to identify themselves. Many of the gang members will frequently dress in these colors.

CLOTHING
Some gangs use particular sports team clothing to represent their gang by picking a team that uses the colors associated with gangs. They may also pick out a team's clothing because of the symbol represented by that team, such as the five point star used by the Dallas Cowboys. However, popular fashion has now adopted "street style," making it more difficult to distinguish a gang member by their clothing alone.

JEWELRY
Gangs are often associated with one of two groups: the Folks or Hoover Nation gang, or the Peoples. Jewelry with a six-point star indicates a membership with a gang related to the Folks and a five-point star is associated with the Peoples.

STREET NAMES
Members of gangs use "street names" with one another. The names are used to conceal identification from law enforcement. Sometimes gang members address each other as "Folks" and "People."
