John Whitehead is an independent television producer based in St. Paul, Minnesota. From 1980 until 1988, Mr. Whitehead worked as a cameraman and editor, first in TV news and then in documentaries. His credits as a cinematographer include programs for FRONTLINE and "P.O.V." As a producer/director, Mr. Whitehead has produced a wide variety of programs that range in style and tone from social issue documentaries to humor and parody. His documentary work includes CLAY, WOOD, FIRE, SPIRIT (winner, two 1997 Midwest Emmys), a video portrait of potter and environmentalist Richard Bresnahan which aired nationally on PBS in May, 1998.

Mr. Whitehead's programs documenting the culture and folkways of the upper Midwest include HOW TO TALK MINNESOTAN, a mock "language training tape" based on Howard Mohr's best-selling book (winner, 1992 Midwest Emmy); NOT QUITE AMERICAN, a portrait of Minnesota poet and essayist, Bill Holm; A STATE FAIR SCRAPBOOK, an irreverent cultural history of the 150-year old Minnesota State Fair; and MISSISSIPPI, MN (CEN Best Cultural Documentary), a lyrical documentary about the Mississippi River as seen through the eyes of six Minnesotans who live or work on the river. Mr. Whitehead is currently in production on DEATH OF A DREAM, a documentary about the history of the classic Midwest farm house. Based on the book by William Gabler, it is a co-production of The Afton Press and KTCA.

Mr. Whitehead's work has won numerous awards including six regional Emmys, a Corporation for Public Broadcasting Award, and a Gold Plaque from The Chicago Film Festival. He spent 1993-1994 as a William Benton Fellow at The University of Chicago.
