World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1 since 1988, serves to strengthen the global effort to face the challenges of the AIDS pandemic, which continues to spread throughout every region of the world. This organized effort is designed to encourage public support for programs that prevent the spread of HIV infection and to provide education and awareness of issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.

The American Association for World Health, located in Washington, D.C., annually coordinates World AIDS Day within the United States. The 1998 World AIDS Day theme, "Be a Force for Change," conveys to young people that their concerns, ideas and support for this year's initiative are needed and desired. For more information on World AIDS Day or to receive a 1998 Resource Booklet, contact the AAWH at (202) 466-5883 (email: AAWHstaff@aol.com) or visit their website (www.aawhworldhealth.org/WAD98/wad98.htm) to download a copy of the 1998 World AIDS Day Resource Booklet.
