Filmmaker Richard Kotuk died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 55 in February 1998, shortly after completion of the film. He was the recipient of thirteen Emmy Awards for his documentaries and also earned an Academy Award nomination for "Children of Darkness." Kotuk spent eight years producing and directing "Bill Moyers Journal" and other PBS documentaries following five years with CBS News. Travis and his grandmother miss Richard very much, and remain close to the Kotuk family.
