98% of cluster bomb casualties are civilians. Roughly 40% are children. So far, 98 countries have signed the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions to ban the use, production and transfer of cluster bombs. The United States, with stockpiles of millions of cluster bombs, has not.

Weapons that harm civilians almost exclusively cannot be justified. Tell President Obama to ban these gruesome weapons and sign the Convention on Cluster Munitions today:

How about new US president Obama? Many believe to be the hope of people in this century. Please help Lao people clear unexploded bombs left over by US-Secret War in Laos.

Hope your action will make a great impact on the life of innocent people in Laos.

Progress on cluster bombs ban: the good, bad...

The good: Tucked into the 580 billion spending bill the US Congress passed last week was a provision severely restricting the export of cluster bombs. International outrage over Israel\'s use of more than a million of the bomblets in civilian areas of southern Lebanon in 2006, coupled with pressure from domestic human rights groups seem to have pushed congress to act. According to the UN about 400,000 of the bomblets did not explode on impact. So egregious were Israel\'s actions and so sweeping the international condemnation that, in late January 2007, even the U.S. Sate Dept. was forced to concede \"there may -- likely could have been some violations\" by Israel of arms control accords with the United States.

The bad: Barely a week after the Congressional ban, the Israeli army announced that it had concluded its investigation of the use of cluster bombs in Lebanon and found that Israel\'s actions were legal and had not violated international law. \"When these weapons were used in urban areas, they were responses of a defensive nature against rocket attacks from villages which had been evacuated by most of their inhabitants,\" the Israeli statement read in part.

The hopeful: There appears to be increased momentum in the push to ban cluster bombs. Here are a few links on the subject:

Every day i hear of new or old atrocity our Government and military has done or is doing. It brings tears to my eyes every time i hear an innocent life been destroyed by the after math of one of our so called wars. What happened at Laos is horrendous to say the least. I went through training in the military and have seen things that discust, and frighten me to the core. The efforts to clear the bombies are not enough. And our government has neglected to take full responsibility for their actions for far too long. It is time they did more to help those in Laos and other places the aftermath that our so called assisted annihilation of communism in the world has left behind.

Current and past American governments have created chaos and destruction in many countries throughout the world and need to be made accountable. As a nation the American people need to understand the lies that are being told and have been told. History already shows that America lied to become involved in the Vietnam war and have continued to lie about their involvement in Iraq. They dumped Agent Orange and many other chemicals, as well as copious amounts of bombs in Vietnam with full knowledge of the devastation it would inflict. As an Australian citizen I am overjoyed at our new Prime Ministers decision to remove Australian troops from Iraq. No longer, will we be Bush\'s puppets!

World Education/Consortium has been working in Laos since 1992 on UXO education in 35 of the most heavily impacted districts. We also provide medical assistance to all survivors of UXO accidents through the War Victims Medical Fund and have been upgrading the emergency medical care in hospitals of provinces and districts where bombies are prevalent. I\'m surprised World Education/consortium was not mentioned. If you are interested in donating funds or learning more about these efforts please contact me.

I think most of the people posting on this website would be interested in the Legacies of War website
http://www.legaciesofwar.org/
and my own http://www.plainofjars.net/welcome.html
I have lived and worked in Lao PDR off on and on since 1996, and the similar to most people on this site, the discovery of what the US government did shocked me into reading up on the issue, and finally writing about it in a novel. I still travel to Lao to visit my friends there, and each time I visit the Plain of Jars, I always hear of a new incident involving bombies. The problem can be controlled, but it may never go away. The only good that can come of it is to the mass populace of countries like the US about the real consequences of war. Unfortunately, this hasn\'t been the case when it comes to Iraq

09/05/2007

Yes, you are all heart broken but still choose a leader like bush who invades other nations for there resourse,All this bull about stability in iraq, get out of there! it is going to look like Laos.Do not choose a radical leader again like bush or kenedy!

09/05/2007

This sight is probably older than my son. All we do is talk and get nothing done. Bush is still in power and destroying people's lives and getting his hands on greasy oil. Before Americans choose there leader, why dont they think?

Did Vietnam have weapons of mass distruction? Why was US in the war? It was a conflict between there own country, the north and the south. So what did all the US solder die for? Nothing! It was a lost of tax payer's money and the lives of the poor solders. There was no reason for US to be in that region, especially in Laos. Now the war is over and look how dumb Kenedy looks. It is sad to say US is surely not going to compensate for its injustice in Vietnam nor in Lao.

Hi. I just watched a documentary about the bombs in Laos and I was extremely bothered by this. I feel such sympathy for the people in Laos and I want to do something to help them. I do not know what I can do besides help to make more people aware of this situation which may hopefully eventually push our government into providing more help to this country which we wrongly bombed. Thank you, Rhonda

09/22/2006

No mater how much I scold those people in congress, they're not going to compensate or even consider looking into this matter. It has been 3 decades now I thinks americans don't want to pull money out of their wallot. US should be obligated in clearing the feilds and compensating on the victims. US shows international authority but fails to take responsibility. How can they convince people in Iraq that their intentions are good if they will not take responsibility in Lao? Leaving Lao littered with with bombies is evil and is done with stupitity. Kenedy has no RIGHT to come to a country and tell people how to run their country. We here in Lao condemn the administration. We do not detest Americans only the ugly ones in congress!

I absolutely think that the U.S. should go back and clean up the mess that they left in Laos. Lao was not the country that was in war with the U.S. but yet got bombed the most ever in history. I believe that one day the country that gave birth to me ca be bomb free. If the U.S. step in and do their part.
