I had the good fortune to see this remarkable film last week, at a critical point in my life. I was wrestling with a spiritual dilemma and questioning God's will for me. Others were involved, and I was deeply torn. I was reminded of Rilke's quote to "Be patient toward all that is unsolved in our hearts" and "try to love the questions themselves" as we "live into the answers" and then saw Father McNamee's story on film. Everything in it confirmed Rilke's insight and gave me peace to let go of my pain. The answer came, and I thank God for Christians who honor their struggles and share the dark side of their faith.

The story line, the director, the script, and of course David Morse(an actor, who very noticably, takes seriously his trade of acting)have all contributed to the success of this film. The time has arrived that the religious (priests, nuns, ministers, and rabies, etc.)men and women be viewed as normal human beings and not twisted or warped as seen by a twisted or warped writer or director. I hope that "Diary of a City Priest" is just the beginning, and that the future will deliver more story lines and films of the same quallity. Stories of our modern Saints, would be a great direction to move in (Mother Theresa, Mother Seton; etc.

I thought that the film was well done and did an especially good job in presenting the life of a priest. It is especially poignant and timely given the recent sexual abuse charges against priests in many diocese. Here you see a real man - not a saint - doing what, in some ways, he must do. It is an honest portrait neither impossibly pious nor - what's worse - covertly devious. Like much of life his response to God and the unheralded heroism that takes place each day, is not the stuff that makes the news or the nomimees for beatification. Joe Clarke

The movie sounds wonderful and David Morse is just about my favorite actor. But where and when will I ever be able to see it?

I had the pleasure of seeing this beautiful film at Sundance 2001 and have been trolling for news of its being shown ever since. What a work of art! I was moved to tears throughout by David Morse's portrayal of Father Mac and in the storytelling itself. His life of service is beautifully captured here, and as a former Catholic school teacher I want so much to share this film with the priests and other religious at my old school. Don't let this film languish in the can any longer! There are so few important metaphysical movies out there and this one shines so brightly ... it is one of the few I'd like to own.

I watch the film and thought it was wonderful. It was well made and well acted. I would love to own a copy or be able to see this film again. ~ r
