COMPANERAS profiles America’s first all-female mariachi band, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles. Founded in 1994, the 12 members of Reyna shatter age-old stereotypes while expanding the popularity of mariachi music. In a culture and a musical tradition that has always been male-dominated, these women are true pioneers, literally giving voice to Latinas. An INDEPENDENT LENS acquisition.
Premiere: Independent Lens, April 1, 2008 at 10 PM
"The opening sequence of COMPAÑERAS will take your breath away."
- The Austin Chronicle
"... The operative word here is passionate. The women bring such power and feeling to this 19th-century Mexican tradition that audiences can only assume they know what they’re singing about when they plead for the return of a lover or berate him for his drinking, betrayals and assorted misbehavior."
- New York Times
"... A richly entertaining look at America's first all-female mariachi band, COMPANERAS on Independent Lens."
- Hartford Courant
"The women who appear in COMPANERAS tell compelling stories of their passion for the music and their devotion to their instruments, rousing their audiences, male and female, all impressed by the form’s supple, melodramatic storytelling, and the Reyna members’ skills."
- PopMatters
"The women of Reyna are passionate about their music, and it's a treat to hear a different take on traditional mariachi ... If you're home tonight at 10 (double-check your local listings), it might be worth switching over from "The Real Housewives of New York City" to give these women a listen."
