Belarus is Europe's last dictatorship, a society of total political control, nuclear pollution and mass poverty. Human rights activists in Belarus often fall victim to a merciless strategy of persecution by the government. BELARUSIAN WALTZ is the story of Alexander Pushkin, a performance artist who used his "patriotic" art to protest against his country's dictatorship.
Co-production of Piraya Film, ITVS International, MG Productions and Arte
Premiere: P.O.V., August 12, 2008 at 10 PM
"If you've been wondering when you can finally see a documentary about protests in Belarus—and who hasn't?—you're in luck: PBS' BELARUSIAN WALTZ, premiering tonight [on P.O.V.], fits the bill. "
- GQ Magazine
"BELARUSIAN WALTZ is an unvarnished depiction of the comedy of technocracy and the tragedy of complicity."
- Globe and Mail
"Like those old Civil Defense shelters sometimes found hidden away in basements of buildings undergoing demolition, the nation of Belarus is a sad but perversely fascinating relic of the Cold War. "
- The Miami Herald
