With its four operas and seventeen-hour running time, staging Wagner's "Ring Cycle" is a daunting undertaking for any opera company. SING FASTER goes backstage at the San Francisco Opera to capture this rare event from a unique perspective: the stagehands' point of view. From Rhinemaidens, Valkyries and giant dragons, to poker games and smoke machines, these behind-the-scenes stars lead us through their own version of the operatic spectacle.

Premiere: Independent Lens, September 1999

"In the jargon of the critical profession, this is what is known as a scream...a wonderfully raucous idea with inspired editing."
- Hollywood Reporter
"Jon Else gives us a glimpse of the opera's unsung heroes - stagehands - with his fascinating and often comic film. A must for anyone who ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of lavish productions."
- S.F. Weekly
"One could scarcely imagine a more energizing or enlightening introduction to Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" than Jon Else's documentary...Else's camera and expert editing depict a world that teeters on the brink of chaos."
- San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle
