why i work with teens on performance poetry

as an educator, i've found that the single most influential and successful tool to use in a diverse gropu of youths is oral or performance poetry.

all evidence here in the san francisco bay area has been that this is a growing movement that has lots of room for new voices. from day one (septemeber, 1997) teenagers from all ethnic, cultural, and class backgrounds, of both genders and differing sexual orientations have found something for themselves in the writing, performing, and listening to spoken word poetry.

not only are these teen poets expressing themselves and the time they live in, they are also finding the courage to get on stage to perform their poems, and to also ask themselves, their peers, and the larger sociey difficult questions. i believe many of the youths are finding that the acts of writing and performing poetry are freeing acts. for years, poetry was taught as a limited art form - one that only a few could read/write. i believe that has now changed.

i'd love to know your opinion on this - i'd be interested in hearing from both classroom teachers and afterschool program directors on the successes and/or difficulties you've had in teaching poetry to youths.

thanks

I have just received a grant from the Saint Paul Public Library to host a teen poetry slam. I am very excited for this event, and was curious if I could get some feedback or advice on things to avoid, rules and regulations, etc... Thank you! Marika marika.staloch@ci.stpaul.mn.us

To Marika From 10/29/01 I write and teach creative writing at the high school level. Last year I hosted a high school slam. Over 150 students and community memebers attended. I asked students to use school approprate lang. (Damn, hell, shit..ok) The slam followed standard guidelines...no props, 3 min time limits, no music, etc. The audience judged (I picked for as unbiased selection as possible). I also had an open mic time and a local band of high school students did a two song set before the slam began. The whole event lasted about 1 and 1/2 hours and the students have clamored for more since then. The winners received nothing but the glory of winning and their pictures in the local paper, but the event was deemed a success by all involved. If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me. Good Luck! Angelina Bellebuono abellebuono@mindspring.com

Hi, I wanted to tell you that I think your idea of poetry in the class room is great. I am a fan of poetry slam and I think it is a wonderful yet theraputic technique for our youth to develop at a young age. I recently got hired to instruct a after school writers voice work shop and my goal is to creat a slam as well. I'm hoping my teens will flow with the program and give positive feedback. I was also interested if you might have any tips or ideas on how I should demonstrate or teach my teens to write in such a format. I"m lacking the beginers tools to help me move foward. Thanks for your time... Sole

I would like to let you know that I think this is a great idea. I am currently studying to be an ESL teacher and I am looking for ways for my future students to express themselves in a healthy way. I myslef love SLAM and have been writting poetry since I was a troubles teen who needed to vent. I think this is a great outlet for teens to express themselves and make themselves heard.
