I showed Poetic License to my students and now they won't leave me alone until we organize our own slam. One of my students who used to sleep all day in class because he skateboarded all night was known as Skater Dude. He's got a new name now. It's Poetry Dude.

This is exciting.

Thanks, Robert

An update:
After weeks of preparation and practice, my students, 7th graders, formed five teams of six students each.

We had the slam yesterday and there were 180 other students in the audience. A couple of the popular students got high scores but also getting top scores were a couple of hard core introverts. Juanita, who is deathly afraid to speak in class (she's had counseling because of this), volunteered to participate in the slam and she did fine.

A couple of my students who are failing my class for turning in zero homework for the entire year decided to participate and they were great.

My students are in a frenzy. Not some, all 150 of them.

Those students who didn't pay attention to my lectures still don't pay attention to my lectures but now they're drawing on their binders "Poetry Rocks."

This is a revolution with a mind of its own. In 26 years teaching, I've never seen anything like it.

Thank you again for the catalyst.

I showed the film to the teens I work with last Tuesday. They loved it. They often can't focus for long periods but were mesmerized by the amazing teens you show in your film. They want to know where they can go hear youth slam in San Jose. Do you know? I know where the adult slams are but not youth. I am so excited about their interest in going to see more slam. They really need more positive outlets for their frustrations. Thanks for making this film.

Specific reactions to what they saw in your film: "That was tight." "I think the girl with blue hair is cool." "Can you write about anything, no matter what?"

Poetic License has inspired even my least motivated students not only to love poetry for the first time, but also to write it.

We have now seen the future. Thank you for giving us a glimpse of it's wide promise. Let us geezers now use our clout to find some corporate sponsorship to underwrite this developement so it can come to full blossom. When real opportunity is so clear it would be sinful to ignore it. Thank yo

I stumbled upon this show accidentally and was immediately drawn in. I have a 16 year old boy who writes poetry and short stories and I saw him in each of these people. The final poem read by a young man brought me to tears and filled me with hope, hope for our young adults and hope for my own child that they can find their way through the storm, with a path of their words. I am watching to see if it will air again so my son can view it a

This program was definitely inspirational especially to an aspiring poet such as myself who is 10-15 years the senior of some of these young adults. I applaud the producer for bringing to light a form of media and expression that is overshadowed in today's world of hip-hop music. For a show about spoken word, I was left speechle

This show was unbelievable! I hope you publish a book that contains the poems. It made me want to grab my journal and resume writing poetry, even though it's been about eight years since I last tried.

My only regret is that I didn't know about the Slam or how the NYC Team needed an adult to go with them. I would have gone, and I know several other people who feel the same way.

Keep up the good w

The 'Poetic License' show about poetry slams was awesome! It touched me on many levels, and I was filled with admiration for the young poets, and some hope for our future in America. I wonder if there are poetry slams near where I live in Denver, Colorado, because I'd sure like to go to one if there was, or help to start

All I can say about your video is WOW! I was so moved by the passion and honesty of those kids. My son was inspired. What touched me the most was the kids in the competition putting aside competition and mutually supporting each other in their art. What a lot we have to learn from these ki

Wow... it's been said before, but...WOW. I was moved by the program. I needed to say this to someone. The young man "reflecting on his youth" by flipping through his earliest poems made me laugh. I thought of the napkins and crinkled scraps of paper with my meandering juvenile attempts at poetic expression that I have tucked away in an envelope. I know that today, though not a poet, I am a better human for having written them. Simply considering the value of poetry for these young people gives me hope.
