The Beach
by Jillian Bateman

I sing of the beach,
The shoreline waves met the damp sand in sheer precision,
each time as if struggling to reach one inch farther than the previous,
From the distance I marveled at Poseidon's makings, the mammoth monsters
embarking the ocean,
White foam spat from there mouths as they finally curled over near the
shoreline each trying to embrace the sand as they perished into the darkness
of the sea,

I sing of the salt from the chilling water,
Filling the air with a humid breeze,
The sun beating down burning the blistering, course sand,
I sing of the seagulls screaming out in competition, scrambling over mounds
of sand,
I watch as they bellow each louder than the prior,
Flapping there wings rapidly gnawing at each other
I watch their contentious ways and I am reminded of how alike we sometimes
are,

And so here I stand as I sing,
I sing of the monsters of the sea and their harmonious rhythm,
I sing of the salt that fills the air,
I sing of the scorching heat beating down,
I sing of the quarreling seagulls,
I sing of the Beach
