Untouchable Face
by Daniel Sanders

I could make you happy you know
if you weren't already
I could do a lot of things
and I do
        -Ani DiFranco

Sarah barged in
wearing Nancy Sinatra boots
and a pair of aloha eyes that
leaked Mascara down to her cheeks
like Tammy Faye Baker, and she
couldn't utter a single word.

I fell further into the chair,
with paralyzed wooden legs,
just like three o'clock on a rainy
April Tuesday, when she brushed
aside the curtains, and
her naked silhouette made me cry.
Back when we spun circles at night
when we spent days at a time
laying together, watching each other
listening to passing trains.

She fed me spoonfuls of life and
we walked so majestically through
nighttime winter parks
smoking cigarettes
holding gloved hands,
and she breathed
our halos.
Happy. Then the dish
ran away with a spoon,
leaving me (hungry? Over the moon?).

so fuck you
and your untouchable face
and fuck you

for existing in the first place
I stare out the window sometimes
hoping to hear a train whistle
and listen to see how far she's gone.
