If only
by Ritika Aggarwal

Her whole life she longed for someone to love her
In the winter she longed for the sweet warmth of a lover near a fire
In the spring she longed to be one of the girls giddy with budding love
In the summer she longed to lay on the beach with the warm waves lapping their legs
In the fall she longed to be held close when the leaves fell from the autumn trees
One day, after a day of upsets and love consciousness, she realized she only had herself.
She focused on going to deeper levels of herself.
She listened to music all the time, and was very intelligent, but no one knew.
She stopped trying to let people get to know her,
Only learning about others, and never letting her beauty shine.
She knew that she was smart, intelligent, and people would like her
If only
If only she wasn't always the "Friend"
If only she got into meaningless relationships
If only she hadn't got her pride shot down and her confidence mangled
IF ONLY PEOPLE WERE REAL
If only people were real she wouldn't have to wear a mask
She wouldn't have to censor herself for fear of making others uncomfortable
Or not fitting in.
Or not being accepted.
Now, when she loves herself and only herself she can nurture all of those parts of herself.
Keeping only a few close, and everyone else at arm's length
But its only because others did it to her.
Or is it?
Is it all on her?
It's her fault for being female, wanting something, and trying to get it.
Right?
If only one person had stopped to say that she counted
They appreciated her for who she was
Who she wanted to be
Who she could be
Who she was and is
If they had only taken a moment of their life and invested it in her
She wouldn't be a snail with a weak shell
She wouldn't be afraid to tell
She wouldn't be on a dry spell
But for the mean time,
She loves her.
And her loves she.
