Life
by Ellie McCutcheon
Age: 12

Beep! Beep! Beep!!!!
Time for another day of work
But today is special
Sara and Tara
Don't know that
I'm coming home
Tonight after work
For their birthdays
Life is Good.

I get in the car
I'm going to call
My beautiful wife
Ashley
She will be so happy
To hear
That I got promoted
Now my office
On the 80th floor
Of the World Trade Center
Life is Great.

I sit down at
My brand new desk
Pick up
My phone
Touch ten numbers
And wait for someone
To answer
After two rings
I hear that familiar voice
Life is Sweet.

Hearing Ashley's voice
I say
"I'm flying home
To Tennessee
After work
For the girls' birthday
But don't tell them...
It's a surprise!"
She is so happy
Life is Wonderful.

I love my two daughters
I love Ashley
Ashley says she also has
A surprise for me
That she will tell me
When I get home
I can't stand surprises
So I beg
Until she utters
Six wonderful words
"You will be a father again."
Life is Brilliant.

I'm rejoicing
With Nick
My friend
And my colleague
I love my wife
I love my job
I love my life
Today
Nothing can go wrong
Life is Unbelievable.

I hear a scream
I look out the window
Something appears
To be flying toward me
Heading for ME
Nothing but ME
I am the target
Everything
Happening
In slow motion
I leap to the side
Realizing it is an airplane
Life is Scary.

But this nightmare continues
It breaks through the glass
Our only protection
Bang!
It stabs me
Like a sword
I am pinned down
By a piece of fuselage
It is dancing with flames
Life is Painful.

Help!
I look around
Nothing is moving
Except the fire
I hear screams
I see terror
I smell death
I feel fear
Will I get out alive?
Life is Unpredictable.

I have to
Escape
I have to
See my daughters
I have to
Hear my wife
I have to
Talk to friends
I have to
Be helped
Life is complicated.

But now I Realize...
I never understood
The importance of Life
Am I the most important one?
The only one?
What about sharing
And giving up everything
Or risking your life
To help others in need
I am just one person
With one life
Making a small difference
I am not the only one...
Suddenly
Under me
The tower collapses
And life collapses with it.
