Phil Bertelsen
Director/Writer
Phil Bertelsen holds an M.F.A. from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where he was a Johnson Scholar and a Spike Lee Fellow. His short film, Around the Time, was honored with a Student Academy Award, a Wasserman Award as Best Film at NYU, a Roger Award for Best American Short at the New York/Avignon Film Festival, and Best Short at the Urban World Film Festival. Bertelsen recently finished The Sunshine, an award-winning documentary about a flophouse on New York's skid row. He is currently developing a screenplay adaptation of the novel Caucasia for Good Machine through work he completed at the Sundance Institute Directors' and Writers' Workshops. Bertelsen is also contributing to Matters of Race, a four-part PBS documentary series on race. Prior to coming to New York, Bertelsen was a producer /director of public affairs for both cable and public television, helping to launch Philadelphia's public broadcast station WYBE-TV.
Katy Chevigny
Producer
Katy Chevigny formed Big Mouth Productions in 1997 with her colleague Julia Pimsleur in order to produce and support the work of emerging social issue documentary filmmakers. In 2000, Chevigny also formed Arts Engine, Inc., a non-profit production entity to further support the work of emerging social-issue documentary filmmakers and media makers. Chevigny directed Journey to the West, a feature length documentary about traditional Chinese medical practices in America. Prior to producing OUTSIDE LOOKING IN, Chevigny produced three feature-length documentaries (Innocent Until Proven Guilty, Nuyorican Dreams and Brother Born Again). She directed/produced several short documentaries and advocacy videos about social issues for use by non-profit organizations.
Dallas Brennan
Co-Producer
Dallas Brennan is a 1997/98 Fulbright Scholar who conducted research on television programming and the construction of a national identity in Trinidad, West Indies. She is a full-time documentary producer at Big Mouth Productions, where she co-produced Journey to the West: Chinese Medicine Today and is producing two feature-length documentaries in development. Prior to joining Big Mouth, Brennan worked in multiple capacities on the ITVS documentaries, OUR HOUSE: A Very Real Documentary about the Kids of Gay and Lesbian Parents and An American Love Story. She has also served as a researcher and consultant with the New York Museum of American Folk Art and the Levy/Paley Galleries of Philadelphia.
John Foster
Director of Photography
John Foster has been shooting feature films, documentaries and television programs for almost 20 years. Foster and Bertelsen teamed up for Bertelsen's previous documentary, The Sunshine, and both attended the 2000 Sundance Institute Directors' workshop together. Foster has also worked with Big Mouth Productions on prior projects, shooting Innocent Until Proven Guilty. Foster has been the director of photography for several feature films, including Sunday (winner of Best Cinematography at Sundance), The Adventures of Sebastian Cole, and Tully.
Alejandro Smith
Director of Photography
Alejandro Smith has been shooting and directing photography for Gabriel Films (Final Judgement; The Farm, Angola USA; The Freedom Trail; The Purpose; St. Gabriel's Woman's Prison; and Shadows of Doubt) as well as serving as the video journalist for New York Times TV's Metro Hospital series.
Emma Morris
Editor
Emma Morris is an editor, director and producer whose awards include an Emmy (Voices of Sarafina), an Academy Award (Close Harmony) and an Academy Award nomination (A Stitch in Time). Morris' films have won Cine Golden Eagle Awards (Paving the Way and USSR Art), a Golden Gate Award (To Be A Doctor), and have been an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival (Something Within Me).
Quincy Jones Media Group (Quincy Jones, Joel Simon, and Jill Tanner)
Executive Producer
Quincy Jones has been in the entertainment business for over 50 years. Starting out as a Grammy Award-winning music composer and producer, Jones went on to executive produce The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Mad TV and In the House. In feature films, Jones produced The Color Purple and executive produced Passing Glory for TNT.
