Other side of the postcard reads...

REFRIGERATOR MOTHERS
(Documentary; 1 hour)
by David E. Simpson, J.J. Hanley and Gordon Quinn
From the 1950s through the '70s, the medical establishment thought it had found the root cause of autism: poor mothering. Doctors presumed that the bizarre behaviors of autistic children - rigid rituals, speech difficulty, and self-isolation - stemmed from their mothers' emotional frigidity. Now we know that autism is a brain disorder. But for a generation of women, branded as cold "refrigerator mothers," the damage had been done.

REFRIGERATOR MOTHERS was produced by Kartemquin Educational Films in association with the Independent Television Service (ITVS) with funds provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
