III. What's Happening in Communities

As you read about what's happening in other communities and become inspired about working with THE NEW AMERICANS, please let us know about opportunities to highlight the program at conferences or other public meetings and workshops. Don't forget to share your plans by posting your activities at http://www.itvs.org/outreach/newamericans/map/index.html

Detroit, MI
Detroit Public Television (DPTV), with support from Annie E. Casey Foundation, plans to provide a local perspective to the PBS series by inviting recent immigrants to tell their stories. At least five stories will be presented as on-air vignettes in the months preceding the PBS series; others will be posted on the DPTV website. The project is designed to raise awareness among the general population about: the conditions that precipitate immigration to the U.S.; the experience of living in a new country and confronting a different culture; and parallels between their lives and ours. The ultimate goal is to reinforce the message that immigrants are firmly connected to the Detroit community and are part of its fabric.
