Research Themes for Students and Community Organizations

The following is a list of themes separated by country to give students and community organizations using the New Americans Series Guide an opportunity to gain a better historical understanding of key factors bringing immigrants and refugees to the United States.
  1. Nigeria
    • The struggle of the Ogoni people against Shell Oil (read Ken Saro Wiwa's work; look at Shell Oil website text, Greenpeace, etc.)
    • Who may qualify for refugee status and what benefits do they get? Who has that status?
    • Refugee groups—where and what they're fleeing
    • Where do the world's refugees go? How the U.S. compares to other host countries
  2. Mexico
    • The meatpacking industry and its labor history
    • The struggle for control of water in Mexico (and other developing countries)
    • Percent of Mexican economy supported by immigrant workers; amount of money sent home by immigrants
    • Cesar Chavez, the UFW and the farm workers movement
  3. The Dominican Republic
    • The recruitment of foreign athletes
    • History of US relations with DR
  4. India
    • The political debate over H1B status
    • Economic development of India since liberation—why are there so many well-educated Indians and not enough jobs?
  5. Palestine
    • Gender Roles in Palestine and the Middle East
    • History of the Arab-American community in the U.S.
    • History of the Palestine/Israel conflict
  6. United States
    • Immigration patterns from the countries highlighted (Dominican Republic, Nigeria, Mexico, Palestine, India)
