ITVS' Community Connections Project is pleased to announce 13 NEW AMERICANS Community Engagement grants to public television stations and their community partners. We received excellent applications and the selected projects were chosen for their strong community partnerships, innovative outreach initiatives and plans for sustainability after broadcast.

Nebraska ETV Network (NETV)
NETV and Southeast Community College will target the college audience on three campuses and the television audience of the entire state. SCC will present an intensive workshop for their ESL instructors; utilize ITVS resources in their ongoing faculty/staff diversity training; and organize campus events for students, faculty and staff. NETV will present a statewide public television outreach call-in special on April 7, featuring experts from key agencies.

WEDU - Tampa, FL
WEDU, in partnership with the Florida Center for Survivors of Torture, Strength-Based Supportive Solutions and local educational and employment institutions, will provide training to business and organizations that provide support, services, education, training and jobs to refugees. The training will strive to sensitize these businesses and organizations to the diverse issues, needs and cultures of refugees highlighting the value refugees bring to the local community and its workplaces.

WHYY - Philadelphia, PA
This collaborative effort of Nationalities Service Center, the Community College of Philadelphia and WHYY, consists of three forums designed to deepen understanding and raise awareness of issues facing immigrant communities. These forums will also provide networking opportunities and resource development for a diverse field of participants.

Iowa Public Television (IPTV)
IPTV will partner with the University of Northern Iowa's New Iowans Program to complement broadcast of the series by integrating program concepts and materials through community forums promoting respect for and accommodation of immigrants and refugees in Iowa through The New Iowans handbook and disseminating the series and handbooks to Iowa classrooms through videoconferencing events.

WHTJ - Charlottesville, VA
In partnership with the Charlottesville City Schools Adult English as a Second Language program, WHTJ will create a workshop that increases cultural awareness and the cross-cultural communication competency of professionals working with immigrants and refugees. WHTJ will also produce a wrap-around program that explores the challenges facing local immigrants, refugees and the community, possible solutions and the advantages of working together.

KLRU - Austin, TX
KLRU, the Austin Police Department and the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library will co-host a town hall meeting that will develop and strengthen coalitions, resources and activities focused on immigration. Filmed and broadcast prior to the premiere of THE NEW AMERICANS series, the town hall meeting will spawn community efforts to address community problems. These efforts will be monitored for three months.

KUED - Salt Lake City, UT
KUED's outreach includes community workshops, a local documentary, a local call-in special, on-air spots and community events. Workshops aimed at fostering understanding and dialogue will include mapping exercises, film clips, interviews with refugees/immigrants, resource materials, cultural performances and ethnic food. A traveling photo exhibit of Utah immigrants will accompany each workshop. An awareness campaign of spots featuring Utah's "new Americans" will be aired along with a half-hour documentary on refugee youth that will be distributed to schools. Additional activities include a call-in special on refugee/immigrant issues and a three-day festival in May.

UNC-TV - Research Triangle Park, NC
UNC-TV's Adult Education pilot program, "The Spanish Community Literacy Project" and the "Bridges to Diversity" outreach campaign will collaborate to conduct community educational awareness workshops and diversity training. These events will: emphasize the need for ESOL; distribute print and Web community resources in Spanish and English; offer Train-the-Trainer Diversity Facilitation workshops, screenings and discussions for community leaders; and distribute information about the ABE and GED programs that are delivered in schools and through broadcast technology.

KEET - Eureka, CA
KEET's outreach initiative will include collaboration with students and staff at the Eureka Adult School. Outreach activities include: the sponsorship of THE NEW AMERICANS Resource Fair, which will encourage community building and provide information on resources available to immigrants and refugees in Humboldt County; a Ready To Learn workshop booth at the fair; and the inclusion of video modules, discussions and other outreach materials in ESL curriculum.

WXEL - Boynton Beach, FL
Through its strong partnership with the Palm Beach County School District Dept. of Adult Education, Instructional Television, Family Literacy, and ESOL, WXEL will reach out to educators, adult ESOL students, immigrant children and families and key professionals from immigrant organizations. Targeted populations will be invited to a screening and discussion where community resource booths will be showcased. WXEL will present workshops and distribute resources to partners and caregivers in Spanish-speaking communities.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB)
SDPB will partner with Lutheran Social Services Refugee and Immigration Department in Sioux Falls, SD; University of South Dakota Business professors in Vermillion, SD; and civic groups such as Rotary and Jaycees. SDPB and partners will work together to give presentations that educate employers and business students about issues facing immigrant workers, providing companion materials and Web resources.

KNME - Albuquerque, NM
KNME will create a learning community with New Mexico Coalition of Literacy, Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program and UNM College Enrichment program. THE NEW AMERICANS of New Mexico Learning Community will organize through workshops, trainings and a statewide conference utilizing outreach materials from the series. To sustain the effort, KNME will develop an online community through email listserv, web page development and links between partnerships.

WSKG - Binghampton, NY
WSKG will work with community partners to create a follow-up program promoting awareness and understanding and addressing local issues and resources for our immigrant and refugee population. The program will be included in an education/training for community colleges, schools, ESL programs, police, health workers and human resource workers. WSKG will also help create an exhibit from local immigrant children's personal stories at our local children's museum.
