Project Overview

The Independent Television Service has designed the Country Boys Community Engagement Campaign to inspire awareness and action concerning important issues faced by some of our young people today. Recent statistics show that: 8.3 million young people in America live with at least one parent who is alcoholic, one million teenagers are being raised by someone other than a parent, 5.2 million children live in extreme poverty, and one in ten teens ages 16-19 are high school drop outs.

THE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CAMPAIGN WILL REACH OUT TO:

• Youth Development Professionals • Substance Abuse Professionals • Youth Agencies • Parents • Rural Communities • Mentoring Organizations • Educators • Social Workers • Colleges /Universities • Policymakers • Faith Communities • Kinship/Foster Care Workers

The goal of the Country Boys Community Engagement Campaign is to support actions that create awareness of and build support systems for young people facing the challenges of growing up. THE GOALS OF THE CAMPAIGN ARE TO:

• Increase the number of adult mentors creating caring relationships with at-risk youth.

• Support discussion and build awareness of the developmental needs of boys and how they can be nurtured through adolescence.

• Connect teens and family members to substance abuse prevention, counseling and treatment programs and support.

• Strengthen partnerships between schools, businesses, faith based organizations, and communities to provide better access to services and support for at-risk or disconnected youth.

• Support policy discussions that address the needs of rural youth including issues of economic development and educational access.

• Support policy discussions on issues related to kinship care.

We are developing strategic partnerships with national organizations who share the goals of this campaign. With the support of our national partners, we will develop complimentary resources (video modules, discussion materials, fact sheets, training guides, etc.) to support community and educational activities. THE NATIONAL PARTNERS ARE:

4-H • Al-Anon/Alateen • American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) • America's Promise • American Psychological Association Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) • Health Ministries Association (HMA) • MENTOR • The National League of Cities
