ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

Meema Spadola is a producer, director and writer for television and radio. She is currently producing WHAT WILL IT TAKE? (with director Thom Powers) a documentary about the epidemic of gun violence in America, which will focus on the Million Moms March in Washington, D.C. Her most recent documentary, produced and directed with Thom Powers, was PRIVATE DICKS: MEN EXPOSED which premiered on HBO in 1999 and surveyed men's attitudes about their penises from childhood to old age. "Alternately funny and quite literally touching, they let it all hang out to achieve something close to wisdom," wrote Entertainment Weekly.

Powers and Spadola's previous documentary, BREASTS, premiered on HBO's Cinemax in January 1997 and became the network's highest rated documentary. Wrote Deborah Tannen, "This is a film that changes how you look at the world and yourself." BREASTS has been broadcast in over a dozen countries. Spadola is also the author of Breasts: Our Most Public Private Parts (Wildcat Canyon Press), based on the documentary. Her autobiographical essay will appear in Out of the Ordinary (St. Martin's Press, July, 2000), an anthology by and about children of gay and lesbian parents. Spadola's radio documentaries have aired on the public radio show, "This American Life."

In conjunction with PRIVATE PARTS and BREASTS, Spadola has appeared on several national television and radio shows including "Leeza" and "Roseanne." Spadola grew up in Searsmont, Maine, studied in Paris, and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1992. Spadola and Thom Powers are partners in Sugar Pictures, a New York City-based production company.
