Jonathan Berman was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up on Long Island. After studying arts and humanities at McGill University in Montreal, he lived and worked in Europe and the Mid-East for a year. He began his career in film and video as an assistant film editor on the documentary "Costa Rica - a Child in the Wind." He continued working in editing and production on various films and television including "Pee-Wee's Playhouse," "The Chair," Elaine May's "In the Spirit" and Jonathan Demme's "Cousin Bobby."

Berman's first film, a 46-minute short called "The Shvitz," is a loving and humorous black and white ode to the patrons and neighborhoods of the traditional steambaths. The film screened theatrically, in numerous film festivals and museums, and on public television internationally.

Other works includes producing "Sabbath in Paradise," an independent German documentary on the downtown NY jazz scene, directing music video for Zero Hour Records and associate producing the indie features "Final Rinse" and "On the Run." Berman has also studied film and art at Bard College's MFA program and has taught filmmaking at Sarah Lawrence College. His work has received grants, fellowships and license agreements from ITVS, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts and the Jerome Foundation.
