Joey won a championship in the 147 lb class at the New York Golden Gloves competition held at Madison Square Garden. The crowd's support for Joey was enormous, and he was thrilled to take home his own set of "golden gloves." The Gloves tournament draws athletes from all over New York State and is often the place where young talent is singled out for professional and Olympic training. After graduating from St. Raymond's School for Boys in the Bronx, Joey began his college career at SUNY (State University of New York) on Long Island, commuting from home, where he was living with his mom Rosie. Since then, Joey has turned professional and (as of December 2004) has a 9 to 0 record with 5 knockouts. Angel is a new dad. He and his girlfriend Karen are celebrating the arrival of their son, Angel Ray, born May 24, 1999. The Bronxchester Boxing Club was recently incorporated as a non-profit organization which allows Angel to receive donations to help maintain the gym. Up to now, all financial support for the gym had been paid for by minimal dues from the few kids who could afford to pay, and by Angel who kept up all the utilities and general maintenance. After Joey's showing at the Golden Gloves, over 30 new kids arrived at the gym wanting to become a part of the Bronxchester Boxing Club. The gym is growing into a significant community resource. Luis has been training fighters in Florida and is contemplating a permanent move there in a year or two. José has finished his junior year of high school in the Bronx. He recently had a series of photos taken and is hoping to embark upon a modeling career. He is still playing competitive chess and has a team win under his belt.
