Reservation Map

Located in southwestern South Dakota between the border of Nebraska and the Black Hills, the Pine Ridge Reservation is the one of nine reservations in South Dakota that are part of the Great Sioux Nation. Created in 1878 as the Pine Ridge Agency, which became a reservation in 1889, Pine Ridge is the second largest reservation in the United States, comprising approximately two million acres of land. Among its 38,000 residents are approximately 17,800 enrolled members of the Oglala Sioux tribe. The residents are scattered in and between seven small towns, making it difficult for them to maintain the community that is so important to their Lakota culture.
