WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
- Send donations to Macedonia Baptist Church.
Although Macedonia Baptist has been rebuilt, the Church is still too small for its congregation and additional items are needed. To send a donation, make checks payable to Macedonia Baptist Church and mail to:
Macedonia Baptist Church
c/o ITVS
P.O. Box 78008
San Francisco, CA 94107-8008
- Raise money to rebuild the burned churches.
According to the NCATF Report to the President, 45 churches have been rebuilt and 67 are undergoing construction. But in the past three years, 1,090 houses of worship have been burned. Donations can be sent to the National Council of Churches Burned Church Fund; the Presbyterian Disaster Service; or Presiding Episcopal Bishop (all at 475 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10115); and to Quaker Workcamps International, 1225 Geranium Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20012.
- Join a church rebuilding project.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development works in partnership with the National Council of Churches and the Congress of National Black Churches under its National Rebuilding Initiative to provide financial and other support for the rebuilding of burned churches. Such work is being coordinated by and accomplished with Habitat for Humanity, local financial institutions and many other organizations. Contact Habitat for Humanity, Quaker Workcamps International, or United Methodist Volunteers in Mission.
- Form a local rapid response team to assist in case of fire.
After a fire, churches and local fire departments often don't think to notify the FBI and the possibility of arson may be overlooked. If an investigation is delayed, evidence may evaporate or be washed away. A rapid response team can spur prompt investigation, as well as assist the pastor and church in making immediate plans to rebuild by raising money and community support.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
has partnered with over 300 organizations to prevent arson. It established the National Arson Prevention Clearinghouse to coordinate technical assistance requests and to distribute materials including church and other structure threat assessment and fire safety documents, juvenile fire-setter intervention brochures, public education materials and community organizing and coalition building guidance.
