The brutal murders of James Byrd, Jr. in Texas and Matthew Shepard in Wyoming have shocked the nation, leaving the majority of Americans reeling from the knowledge that this kind of hatred is not only alive but spreading. How does this kind of violent hate seep into seemingly
peaceful communities? How can someone hate?
Why Hate?
"The Klan offers acceptance to a lot of the younger people in the South who are looking for a place to belong. The youth of today have a variety of problems - they feel left out and are looking for love. Although superficial, hate groups offer acceptance. These young people become pawns in the hands of angry men."
Rev. Jonathan Mouzon, Macedonia Baptist Church
"The stuff of hatred is not the sole province of crazies and extremists. It is comforting but illusionary to view the perpetrators of hate crimes as sick deviants....Many are ordinary folks trying to project outward their own fears and insecurities."
Loretta J. Williams, Ph.D, director Gustavus Myers Center for
the Study of Human Rights and Bigotry, Boston University
from Response Magazine.
