When the race crossed from Texas into Oklahoma there were rumors that
Ed Gardner was going to try to run across the state line first, ahead
of Andy. People were so upset that Andy might not enter his home state
of Oklahoma first that there are rumors that Ku Klux Klansmen threatened
Ed and detained him so Andy could cross into Oklahoma first.
