ANDY PAYNE

Andy Payne #43 did not draw any special attention at the beginning of the race. His high school track career in the mile and half-mile was good, but he had no long distance experience. He came in first at only three checkpoints: Seligman, Arizona, Texola, Oklahoma, and Chelsea, Oklahoma but never fell below fifteenth place overall, even when he was sick with tonsillitis. Payne finished the race in first place and took home $25,000.
