F.F. GUNN
F. F. Gunn, a millionaire who made his money as a contractor
for the Union Pacific railroad, took over the financial management
of Pyle’s race in Springfield, Illinois and was instrumental
in bailing Pyle out in New York. Newspaper headlines declared
that Gunn spent $50,000 to try to win $25,000. Another story said
that the elder Gunn had a bet with friends that Harry
would finish the race. It was said he stood to win more than he
spent keeping his son in the race.
