April 21, Joplin MO to Miller MO

In Missouri Pyle was “negotiating” with both Carthage and Miller for the privilege of hosting the race and its traveling carnival. Angry because Pyle chose Miller (the farther town from Joplin) the citizens of Carthage egged the lead cars as they rolled through in advance of the runners.

April 25, Waynesville MO to Rolla MO

Blisters pads are raw and infected. He has run all the way from Arizona. The checkpoint bus picks him up and takes him into Waynesville.

April 26, Rolla MO to Sullivan MO
The traveling carnival, Pyle’s best moneymaker, was shut down In Rolla MO for operating “games of chance”.

April 27, Sullivan MO to Hillside View Roadhouse, Hillside View MO
Gavuzzi ran into the checkpoint 33 minutes ahead of Payne. The rest of the field was 36 hours behind them.
