April 29, East St. Louis IL to Staunton IL
St. Louis, MO refused to put up money to have the race stop for the night.

April 30, Staunton IL to Virden IL
The runners stayed in the Ainad Shrine Temple in East St. Louis MO.

May 6, Joliet IL to Chicago IL
With his injuries healed, Blisters rejoins the race on the road into Joliet.
The “America” was impounded near Joliet, IL when Pyle’s loan at The Illinois Trust and Savings Bank of Champaign was called in.

May 7, Chicago IL to Gary, IN
Pyle is broke and does not receive the expected payment of $60,000 from the Route 66 Highway Association. Chicago is the end of Route 66 and the beginning of a harder race. Daily distances become farther. Some runners drop out in protest. But Pyle pushes on.
