March 5, Los Angeles CA to Puente CA
All 199 runners made it into the checkpoint on opening day.

March 6, Puente CA to Bloomington CA
Elton Hayes turned back for Los Angeles where he had a fiancée and a good job.

March 8, Victorville CA to Barstow CA
The Cajon Pass was a steep uphill climb for several miles forcing many to drop out.

March 9, Barstow CA to Mojave Wells CA
Barstow was the last stop before four days in the Mojave Desert.

March 10, Mojave Wells CA to Bagdad CA
Through Ludlow, into Bagdad and Danby the runners suffered from the heat and dehydration and third degree sunburn. Organizers couldn’t carry enough water between stops for the number of men in the race and Mojave Wells CA had only one water pump. Andy Payne, an unknown runner and Cherokee from Oklahoma, is running in third place.

March 12, Danby CA to Needles CA
One-fourth of the runners have now dropped out, leaving 146 to move on to Needles.

March 13, Needles CA to Oatman AZ
The runners stood up to Pyle for the first time and refused to make a nearly 50-mile detour to get across the Colorado River.
