Blood Quantum
For Native people blood quantum has been the only way to “prove”
that you are a Native American. If, for example, you had a full-blood
Cherokee mother and a white father, you are 1/2 Cherokee. If one
parent is a full-blood and the other is 1/2 then you would be 3/4ths.
If you married a non-Indian your children would be 3/8ths. If your
children married non-Indians, your grandchildren would be 3/16ths,
and so on.
It wasn’t until 1924 that Native Americans were recognized
as citizens of the United States and given the right to vote.
