Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai was featured in ITVS’ landmark Community Cinema program, producing community outreach screenings in over 50 markets during March 2009. All screenings were conducted between 10-60 days prior to the film’s scheduled national broadcast on Independent Lens and focused on environmental issues, sustainable agriculture, human rights, development, and related issues. Taking Root screenings welcomed more than 4,000 community members to over 55 events, which included special guest speakers and panel discussions with local experts. ITVS produced companion discussion guides to support the screenings and for use by viewers at home; more than 10,000 were downloaded or distributed. More than 150 community-based and national organizations partnered with ITVS to engage audiences around this timely and impactful film. Taking Root is featured in ITVS Community Classroom’s Women’s Empowerment Collection, featuring short video modules and curricular materials that have been distributed to more than 2,500 educators to date, reaching more than 10,000 students and youth. In addition, Taking Root was screened at the Geneva Forum of Social Change, co-presented by ITVS, which brought together more than 1,000 NGOs, students, filmmakers, and activists for film screenings and panel discussions in Geneva, Switzerland in June 2009.
