Arusi Persian Wedding was featured in ITVS’s landmark Community Cinema program, producing community engagement screenings in 50 markets during February 2009. All screenings were conducted between 10 to 60 days prior to the film’s scheduled national broadcast on Independent Lens and focused on the history of Iran and dispelling myths about life in Iran, international relations, cultural identity, and what it means to be an American. Arusi Persian Wedding screenings welcomed 5,000 community members to these events, which included special guest speakers and panel discussions with local community leaders and experts. ITVS produced companion discussion guides to support the screenings and for use by viewers at home. More than 200 community-based and national organizations partnered with ITVS to engage audiences around this timely film that educated audiences about the Iran of today and the past. Said one audience member in Los Angeles, “Discussions and films like this are incredibly vital to enhancing cultural understanding.”
