United Farmworkers' Union

[ English | Español ]

The UFW Today:
The UFW (United Farm Workers Union) fell on harder times after the victorious grape and lettuce boycotts of the late 1960s and early 1970s (a centerpiece of "The Fight in the Fields"), yet it has regained much momentum in recent years. Organizing efforts currently center on strawberry workers in California. The strawberry industry is booming, nearly doubling production in the past 10 years. Meanwhile, workers in the fields have seen dramatic reductions in pay and often labor in deplorable conditions.

Today's UFW is national news. Last November, Time magazine ran an article on strawberry worker organizing and the UFW.

Viva la Causa!
On April 13, 1997, over 30,000 people joined the United Farm Workers of America and the AFL-CIO in a protest march on Watsonville, California to support the rights of strawberry workers.

To continue with the momentum and excitement generated by the thousands of people marching in Watsonville, and to support strawberry workers, here is an action you can do.

History of the UFW:
Read a chronology of César Chávez (on Chicano-Latino Net's website), which closely follows the history of the UFW (on the UFW's website).
