Breaking the Chains of Modern SlaveryThis lesson will examine the global trafficking crisis through the lens of sexual slavery in Cambodia and intergenerational prostitution in India. Through this lesson students will learn that there are more people living in slavery today then at any time in history and consider the causes and consequences for women and children who are disproportionately victimized by the global commercial sex trade. Conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Causes and ImpactIn this lesson, students will make personal connections with a family that has been traumatized and displaced by conflict in their homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo, or DR Congo. Doing so will help put a human face on a far away and unimaginable conflict that is the deadliest since World War II. Students will then investigate various events in DR Congo’s history, determine the causes and impact of the war, and analyze the effects that war has had on women in particular. Digital Media as a Civic Engagement ToolIn this lesson, students will analyze how digital media tools work in less developed nations or areas where media access is limited. In addition, they will evaluate the savvy, resources, skills and support needed to develop effective media outreach. Education for AllStudents will meet Nhi and Phung, two students in the Room to Read program in Vietnam, and learn about their struggles and successes as they pursue their education against all the odds. The activities in the lesson will also engage students in a conversation about the value and meaning of education in their own lives and the impact of the gender imbalance in education on the lives of individual girls around the world and our communities at home. Gender-Based Violence: Challenging ImpunityStudents will follow the journey of Fulamatu, a 14-year-old rape survivor in Sierra Leone, as she attempts to bring her perpetrator to justice. Through her story, students will examine the culture of impunity that enables gender-based violence to flourish, and the impact this issue has on our own communities. Students will also be challenged to consider the factors that contribute to violence against women and girls, and how they can contribute to local and international efforts to eradicate it. Illusions of Democracy: When Is It Not Free or Fair?In this lesson, students look at the principles that might make an election democratic as well as ways in which elections can be inefficient, manipulated or abused.
