The World Fact Book published by the Central Intelligence Agency provides up-to-date vital statistics on all countries in the world.

Index of current, suspended and forgotten conflicts around the world. Includes military budgets of select countries and the Geneva Convention regarding conduct in war.

UNHCR Refugee Statistics & Country Database
This United Nations High Commission for Refugees site provides access to detailed statistics on refugees and information of the situation in countries where UNHCR operates.

World Map of Child Soldiers
The site provides a map and a partial list of recent conflicts where children have been recruited to fight in militias and armies.

Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers (CSC)
The CSC works "to prevent the recruitment and use of children as soldiers, to secure their demobilization and to ensure their rehabilitation and reintegration into society."

International Campaign to Ban Landmines
International Campaign to Ban Landmines is a network of non-governmental organizations in 60 countries, working for a global ban on landmines. The site is accessible in eight languages.

The International Crisis Group
The ICG is an independent, non-profit organization, working through field-based analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict.

Sierra Leone Web Links

The Special Court for Sierra Leone
The court was set up jointly by the Government of Sierra Leone and the United Nations to try those who bear the greatest responsibility for serious violations of international humanitarian law and Sierra Leonean law during the civil war.

Seeds of Peace
Seeds of Peace is a non-profit, non-political organization dedicated to preparing teenagers from areas of conflict with the leadership skills required to promote coexistence and peace.

UNHCR
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established in 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. It is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide.

International Rescue Committee
The IRC was founded in 1933 at the suggestion of Albert Einstein to assist opponents of Hitler. Since that time, the IRC has been a source of relief, hope and renewal to refugees, displaced persons and others fleeing persecution and violent conflict.

Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children
The Women’s Commission works to improve the lives and defend the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children and adolescents.

ICRC
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was founded nearly 150 years ago. Its guiding principle is that even in war there are limits on how warfare is conducted and how combatants behave.

United Nations Peace Keepers
The official site for the U.N. peacekeeping force with facts, images and news on past and current operations. Site is accessible in five languages.

Youth Ambassadors for Peace Project
YAPP aims to mobilize the youth of the world to build a "Children-to-Children Network" on the issue of war-affected children through education, advocacy and action campaigns.

The AjA Project
The AjA Project sponsors education of youth in areas of violent conflict or social upheaval. AjA is an acronym for “supporting self-sufficiency” in Spanish: “Autosuficiencia Juntada con Apoyo.”

MADRE
MADRE is an international women’s human rights organization that works in partnership with women’s community-based groups in conflict areas worldwide.

U.S. Committee for Refugees (USCR)
USCR was founded in 1958 to coordinate the United States' participation in the United Nations' International Refugee Year. Since its inception, USCR has worked for refugee protection and assistance in all regions of the world.

There are many ways for you to raise awareness about the effects of war on teens. Start a discussion group on international issues and/or contact organizations that work with refugee youth, child soldiers and landmine clearance. Use the links below to learn more.

International Rescue Committee (IRC)
The refugee resettlement offices of the IRC welcome volunteers to help in their goal of working with people uprooted by war, civil conflict or ethnic persecution. View a map of their 16 offices located in the U.S.

U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement
From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this directory lists state refugee resettlement coordinators who work with community organizations.

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service
The local resettlement offices of LIRS invites volunteers to help build bridges between new arrivals and the community.

U.S. Committee for Refugees (USCR)

Amnesty International
Amnesty International is an international human rights organization with chapters in local communities, high schools and universities.

Seeds of Peace

Adopt a Minefield Program
